It has a market economy, a high GDP per capita, and a relatively low rate of poverty. In terms of average wealth, Australia ranked 2nd in the world after Switzerland in 2013. The economy of Australia is one of the largest mixed market economies in the world.

The Australian economy is dominated by its service sector, comprising 68% of the GDP. Economic growth is largely dependent on the mining sector and agricultural sector. Rich in natural resources, Australia is a major exporter of agricultural products. Direct Selling in Australia

  • GDP Growth Constant USD 2014: 2.5%
  • YoY Industry Growth Constant USD 2014: 5.4%

The Australian Direct Selling industry is a 1.4B USD industry in 2014 and is a very specific market within the region: the Party-plan model accounts for more than half of the industry revenue which differs from many other countries that have a preeminent Person-to-person.

The number of distributors in Australia (500,000 as of 2014) is relatively low and females represent 85% of the Direct Sellers.

The recent years have seen traditional Party-plan models threatened by the development of E-commerce. Direct Selling companies quickly reacted by adopting Omni-channel approaches and encouraged their distributors to engage in online activities through their personal websites. However, Online retail activities have proven to be less adaptable to Party-plan than pure Person-to-person Sales Methods.

Person-to-person Multi-level marketing companies have high potential in Australia. The industry needs to continue to improve its image and the Direct Selling Association of Australia (DSAA) has been making significant steps in this direction.
